First letter exchange page1 | page3
By fall 2002 three Goleta schools had joined the endeavor. Fifth and sixth grade students at El Rancho, El Camino, and Foothill Elementary Schools had learned about Nepali culture and natural history from several slideshows and lectures. The American students wrote letters to their counter-parts in three schools in rural central Nepal. I collected donated maps (thank you to Map.com of Goleta) and the students gave art supplies and I headed back to Nepal (ostensibly to do geology).

The welcome from the Nepali schools was resounding. They are thrilled to have people on the other side of the world care enough to write and send supplies. Their students wrote reply letters. When the teachers and headmasters were asked what additional supplies
would be most useful, they unanimously talked first about science equipment.
